Lobster

2018

Lobster is the first of three works about immortality. This work considers the theme of biological immortality, taking the lobster as its subject, as it is technically a biologically immortal being. The lobster does not slow, weaken, or lose fertility with age, rather it dies from the energy required to moult its larger and heavier shells later in its lifespan. The fur that covers the lobster’s body and tail draws it closer to our understanding of our own mammalian life, and at the centre resides a representation of the philosophers’ stone, otherwise known as the ‘elixir of life’. This combination brings to mind modern biological science and the revolutionary practice of gene manipulation and other discoveries that bring us closer to extending our lifespans indefinitely. This approach is however only one part of our deep evolutionary drive toward immortality, the fundamental property of all life.
